The Cost Of collects as little as possible.

Anonymous use

Reading scenarios requires no account. We record anonymous events — which scenario was viewed, whether the reveal completed, whether the drawer opened, and whether the share button was tapped — through PostHog. We do not associate these events with a name or email.

Email signups

If you give us your email through the personalization sign-up, we store the email address, the scenario you were on, and the timestamp. We use this only to notify you when personalization is live. We do not sell, share, or trade this list. We do not send a newsletter.

Accounts

Creating an account is optional. If you sign in — via Google or a magic link — we store your email address and the list of scenarios you have completed. This is held in Supabase, a hosted database service, and used only to sync your progress across devices. We do not use it for advertising or share it with third parties. Sign-in via Google is handled by Google’s OAuth service; their privacy policy applies to that step.

Deletion

Write to editor@thecostof.fyi and we’ll remove your email and account data from our records.

Browser storage

Analytics run without cookies. PostHog is set to in-memory mode, so no identifier is written to the device or kept between visits. Session replay, heatmaps, web-vitals autocapture, and broad interaction autocapture are not part of the measurement setup. A few preferences — sound on or off, which scenarios are marked realized, saved personalization inputs — are stored locally on the device and never leave it.

Error monitoring

We use Sentry to monitor errors. Sentry receives technical error data only — no email addresses or personal information.
